How to Implement Environmental Management Systems
An environmental management system is a set of policies and procedures which attempt to regulate the way that a business functions with regard to their environmental impact. Recycling, reusing and reducing waste are often considered in an environmental management system. Implementing such a system requires cooperation across the organization.
- Develop a comprehensive environmental management system. The exact details of the system will vary according to each individual organization. Be sure to include such things as a basic recycling program, a plan to reuse resources, clearly define operating guidelines that focus on reducing waste and a plan to assist employees with the proper utilization of company resources. Create a handbook that employees can review and reference as needed. Hang signs around the workplace that remind employees of the system.
- Educate and train the employees. Take the time to review the environmental management system with each department. Review the employee's responsibilities in regard to the implementation, evaluation and operation of the environmental management system. All employees should have a clear understanding of their role in the successful operation of the system.
- Track the company's progress. Decide on attainable and measurable goals during the implementation of the system. Goals such as a 25 percent reduction in physical waste are a good starting point, because it is a goal that is easily measurable and attainable. Hold employees, supervisors and managers responsible for their roles in order to help the company achieve these goals.
- Re-evaluate the environmental management system on a routine basis. Evaluating the success of the system every 6 months to a year is a great way to measure the effectiveness of the system and to allow time to implement any updates or changes that may be necessary.
