How to Improve Afterschool Programs

Afterschool programs provide children with physical and social benefits that are essential to growing up healthy and happy.  Creating an effective afterschool program can be a challenge, but there are several strategies you can use to simplify the process.  Start the project by outlining your goals and ideas.  Then create a plan to implement the changes effectively.

  1. Note what parts of the current program need to be changed.  Clearly defining what isn’t working will allow you to focus on making the necessary changes.  Once you isolate problem areas, you can begin looking for specific solutions.

  2. Define your objectives.  Think about what you want to accomplish by the end of the project.  Coming up with goals will help you create the strategies you can use to reach them.  Writing down your objectives can also help you break down a large project into a few smaller and more manageable steps.

  3. Decide what resources your project will require.  Afterschool programs can require a variety of resources including supplies and employees.  Depending on the type of changes you want to make, you may need to establish a budget.

  4. Train your employees.  In order to improve afterschool programs, you need to teach the staff about all the changes that need to be done to the current system.  Teach your employees how to communicate with children and help them get the most out of their afterschool activities.  Explain the goals and objectives of afterschool programs and how to run them properly.

  5. Implement the changes.  Speak to parents and children about the new afterschool programs you are putting in place and explain how they will be beneficial to both.  Be open for discussion, and try to include suggestions and ideas from parents and your staff.
