How to Improve Internet Education

The Internet is a modern convenience for many people, but it can be difficult to use for many others. One of the best ways to educate people on using the Internet is to start teaching them and introducing them to it at a young age.

  • Teach your children about the dangers of the Internet. Set ground rules for Internet usage. List the sites they are allowed to visit, and block any sites that are not allowed. You can purchase blocking programs online and from your local computer supply and software stores.

  • Demonstrate to children how to use a search engine. Teach them the importance of keywords and how to phrase the words they are searching for. Show them how to narrow down a group of search words to get more accurate results. For example, they can change "How to trim a dog's hair" to "Trim a Maltese Dog's Hair." Allow your children to use various search engines, and find the one that they like the best or understand well. Make the search engine page your homepage.

  • Teach your children how to determine whether the information on a website is accurate or fabricated. Teach them how to find legitimate sources and which sites they can reference to confirm the accuracy of a web page. Add dictionary, encyclopedia and online news archive sites to your favorites so your children can easily find them.

  • Educate your children on phishing sites and how to avoid them. Teach your children to ask for help if they find a website that looks suspicious with lots of pop ups or ads on it. Do not allow them to enter any personal information into a website form without your permission or guidance.
