How to Improve a Suspension for Drag Racing
Drag racing can be an exhilarating sport for those who enjoy speed and thrills. Ordinary road vehicles are not ideal for use in drag racing as the sport demands cars with incredible acceleration, specialized racing tires and increased suspension. There are a few things you can do to your drag racing car in order to improve its suspension.
Items Needed:
- Anti-roll traction bar
- Adjustable shocks
- Assorted parts for engine and body bracing
- Symmetrical trailing-link suspension
Instructions:
- Consider the type of drive system that already exists in your drag racing car. This should help you determine in what way or ways you will want to improve the suspensions. For example, if you race with a rear wheel drive vehicle, you will want to install an independent rear suspension. If you race with an all-wheel or front wheel drive vehicle, consider another strategy.
- Improve the suspension's rear roll. You can accomplish this by installing an anti-roll traction bar in the axle housing in the rear end of the car.
- Increase the suspension's front roll. You can accomplish this by removing the anti-roll bar at the front end of the car.
- Improve the rear tire load by adding a symmetrical trailing link suspension to the rear end of the car. This will allow the weight to be equally distributed among all four of the wheels during the fast acceleration.
- Reduce the amount of torque. Do this by installing adjustable shocks on all four wheels in order to vary the pressure amount on the springs. By adjusting the amount of tension on the four wheels, the same level of force will be exerted on them during acceleration, meaning that the car will remain level instead of one end rising above the other and the suspension listing to one side.
- Determine if your car displays a considerable amount of flex in any area. If so, consider installing additional bracing, such as body mounts, engine cradle braces or frame connectors to your drag racing car.
