How to Increase Computer Memory
Your computer must have RAM, which is also known as random access memory. RAM is used to help the operating system process application and run faster with this type of storage. RAM is like short-term memory and when it is out of space, you have nowhere to store things. You can increase it on your computer.
Materials Needed:
- Antistatic wristband
- RAM
- Make sure the computer is turned completely off. Unplug the computer.
- Place the computer on a tabletop. Put on an antistatic wristband and secure the clip to a part on the computer. Follow the directions on the package if you are not sure where to clip the clip. Wait for about two minutes before opening the computer.
- Unscrew the cover from the computer. Many computers have screws you can unscrew by hand while others allow you to simply slide the cover case off.
- Locate the slots for the RAM. There are usually two. You should already have one filled but you can add more RAM to the other slot. Use the manual for your computer to see what the maximum amount of memory you can add. There are also tools online that will scan your computer and tell you how much memory is on the computer and how much each slot will hold such as Crucial.
- Place the RAM stick into the vacant slot. Make sure the notches on the RAM are matched up with the notches on the clips. Secure the clips into the notches on the RAM.
- Replace the computer case and plug in the computer. Turn on the computer. Some computers will beep or will not turn on at all if the memory is not loaded correctly. You will have to reopen the computer and make sure the RAM is installed correctly.
