How to Increase Fiber in Your Diet
Eating a fiber rich diet has many positive health benefits that include aiding your body in the absorption of vital nutrients. In addition, the risk of type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and certain types of cancer are also thought to be decreased. Knowing how to increase fiber in your diet may also help with digestive difficulties as well.
- Check the nutritional label on foods when shopping for groceries. Buy foods that contain five or more grams of fiber.
- Eat more whole-grain foods such as whole-grain bread and cereal. Include brown rice, oatmeal and even popcorn in your diet.
- Add beans to your diet and eat them weekly.
- Include more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Try to eat two cups of fruit daily and two and a half cups of vegetables.
- Drink more water, diet soda or unsweetened tea to help your body digest the increased fiber amounts.
- Don't increase your fiber intake drastically all at once. Make small changes so that your body can adjust and you'll suffer less discomfort, such as gas or abdominal cramping.
