How to Increase Fuel Mileage in Auto Engines
The fuel mileage on auto engines is an issue for anyone who drives on a regular basis. Cars with a poor fuel economy simply cost more to operate. Luckily, there are things you can do to optimize your engine's performance and increase your fuel economy.
- Change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles depending on what your owner’s manual recommends. Use oil that reduces as much friction as possible, which will help increase your fuel mileage. Synthetic oils are usually best for reducing friction. They typically cost a little more but they help your engine run more efficiently, saving you money in the long run.
- Replace your engine air filter with every oil change.
- Change your spark plugs at least every 50,000 miles. Old spark plugs can cause your engine to misfire and can cause your fuel economy to drop up to 30 percent. If you’re not sure how long it has been since you last changed your spark plugs, check them to see if they are covered with carbon.
- Use your air conditioner as little as possible. Using your air conditioner makes your engine work harder and use more fuel.
- Take your car into a shop for a tune up. The mechanic will check your fuel injectors, fuel pump and your oxygen sensors to make sure everything is working properly. If any of these mechanisms are in bad shape or aren’t working properly, the mechanic can replace them so your engine will stop using as much fuel.
