How to Increase Job Security
Putting in an extra effort at work is one of the easiest ways to increase your job security. Employers often have to make a tough decision when they have to cut back on personnel. The employees who are the hardest workers or the top performers are usually the ones who keep their job.
- Sit down and compile a list of the strengths and weaknesses you feel you have in your current job position. Be honest so you can identify areas where you need improvement. Work on your weaknesses until you remove them all from the list. Perform this type of self-assessment once every month to see how you are progressing.
- Volunteer for tough assignments at work. Showing a willingness to accept a difficult challenge lets your boss know you are hard to replace. You may receive a promotion if you are able to consistently show that you are capable of taking on the hardest tasks.
- Turn in your work on time or early if possible. Double check your work for errors before you turn it in. Ask your employer for more work once you completed a task. The harder you work the more job security you will have, and you may receive a better raise or a promotion for your extra effort.
- Always show up at least five minutes early to work. Being late shows a careless attitude and will be a negative on your job record. Never be the first one to leave work unless you have a good reason. Leaving right at the end of your shift every day may reflect negatively with your boss.
- Take some continuing education classes. Choose classes that will help you improve at your job or prepare you for career advancement. Even if you happen to lose your job, the classes will look good on your resume at the next employer you apply with.
