How to Insert Metal Railings Into Wood
Metal railings can add an old fashioned or classic look to any deck or porch. They can be inserted into the wooden boards of the deck or porch and are often used to add stability for anyone standing on the deck. Metal railings should be attached tightly to the deck or porch to avoid injuries.
Supplies Needed:
- Drill
- Drill bit set
- Wrench set
- Pencil or Pen
- Metal Railing Kit
- Determine where you would like your metal railings to be on the wood before you begin to install them. Railings work best when installed at waist level or a few inches higher.
- Hold the metal railings on the desired location, and use your pen or pencil to mark the railing holes (found on the bottom of the railing) onto the wood.
- Use your drill and drill bit set to drill holes into the pen or pencil marks. Use a drill bit that is about half the size of the bolts that were supplied in the metal railing kit. If you are not sure which size to use, compare several bits to the bolts to see which one fits.
- Line the metal railing holes up to the holes that you just drilled into the wood.
- Place the bolts that were supplied with the metal railing kit into the metal railing holes.
- Use a wrench to tighten the bolts onto the wood. Be sure to tighten them well so that the metal railings stay secured to the wood.
- Repeat the process until you have installed all the metal railings that you need.
