How to Inspect Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are used to put out different types of fire. In order for them to work properly, they should be inspected at least once a month. If the environment the fire extinguisher is in is severe, the extinguisher should be inspected more often. You do not want to wait until a fire has caused damage to find out there were problems with the extinguisher.

How to Inspect Fire Extinguisher

1. Make sure you thoroughly read the instruction manual for the fire extinguisher. It will have the best procedures for inspecting your specific model.

2. Determine if the extinguisher is disposable or rechargeable. You can refill a rechargeable extinguisher but a disposable extinguisher must be thrown away.

3. Check the entire body for rust, dents and any other types of damage. The extinguisher should always be in good condition.

4. Look around the seal that secures the pin into the handle. The seal should have no evidence of tampering. All seals and pins should not be broken or missing.

5. Check the gauge if there is one. The needle on the gauge will be in the green area if the pressure is satisfactory.

6. Check the last service date and the inspection tag. The extinguisher must have the date of the next inspection. Get it service if it has been a while.

7. Check to see if the pin, nozzle and nameplate are still on the extinguisher. They should always be there.
