How to Install Brake Shoes
The role of brake shoes in a vehicle is to move against the inner drum surface by way of the hydraulic wheel cylinder. This constant pushing can cause the shoe to deteriorate fast, and will eventually need to be replaced.
- Elevate the vehicle. Using a floor jack, raise the vehicle and set it on the jack stands. Make sure they are on the frame and not the suspension.
- Take off the wheels. Use lug nuts to take the wheels off and turn them outward from the vehicle.
- Take the drum off. You will need a bolt for this procedure. Use the bolt to pull tightly on the drum. Don safety eye wear while doing this because there will be debris coming out of the drum when you remove it.
- Take off the brake springs. Using a screwdriver, compress the head on the spring hook until it releases from the shoe.
- Withdraw the spring bolt. This is located in the middle of the shoe. Using a bolt, turn it in a counterclockwise motion until the shoe is released.
- Take the old brake shoe off. Change the old brake shoe with the new one and position it in the brake assembly. Tighten it by using a spring bolt in the clockwise position. Be sure not to screw it too tightly or it will snap. Next, glide the springs onto the screwdriver and hook the shoe spring back into place.
- Put the wheels back on. After you have finished, lower the vehicle back onto the ground.
