How to Install Cedar Fence Posts

If you are working on placing a cedar fence on your property, you need to make sure that the cedar fence posts are placed correctly first.  Measure out your fence space and place the posts the same distance apart all around making a fence that is strong and secure.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure

  • Stakes

  • String

  • Post hole digger

  • Cedar fence posts

  • Gravel

  1. Measure out the area where you will place your cedar fence posts by using a tape measure.  Consider how large the area is that you have measured and think about how far apart you want each post to be from the next one.

  2. Start at one corner of the fence area and measure out where each post will be.  Use stakes to place in the ground where you will put each cedar fence post.  Attach a string to the first stake that you put in the ground and attach it to the next stake that you place along the way.  Use the string to gauge where to place the next stake making sure that it is in line with all of the others.

  3. Dig holes for your fence posts using the stakes that you placed previously as a guide for where to dig.  Use a post hole digger to properly dig and remove the dirt from each hole.

  4. Place your cedar fence posts in the holes that you dug making sure that about one-third of the post is firmly placed in the ground.  Use gravel to fill in the extra space in the hole around the post filling a majority of the hole.  Use dirt to fill in the rest of the space in each hole making sure that each post is as straight as you can get it.
