How to Install Cedar Siding Shingles
You do not need to hire a professional to install your cedar siding shingles. This is something that any do-it-yourselfer will be able to do. In doing so, you will protect your building’s exterior while also giving it a rustic look.
Things That You Will Need
- Starter shingles
- Cedar shingles
- Galvanized nails
- A hammer
- A chalk line
- Some primer
- Either paint or stain
- A wide brush
- Install a starter shingle at the bottom corner of the house. This is done by positioning the shingle and inserting two nails into the upper side of the shingle one inch away from the edge.
- Snap a chalk line for where you want the top of the starter row to go. This is done by holding onto one of the ends of the chalk line’s string. Position the chalk line over the top of the first shingle. Hold onto the other end of the string at the opposite end of the wall and then lift the string, allowing it to snap against the wall. This is done so that you will be able to properly align the shingles on the building’s walls.
- Install the first row of shingles on the bottom edge of your home. Use the chalk line as a guide. Leave between 1/8 to ¼ inch of space between each shingle in case it expands.
- Place a row of shingles over the first row following the same procedure as before. The gaps between the shingles need to be staggered, which means that you may need to cut the first shingle. Continue this process until you reach the top of the wall.
- Use a wide brush to apply primer to your siding. Allow it to dry before applying paint or stain.
