How to Install Exterior Metal Doors
Exterior metal doors are great for security and appearance. They can be water resistant and have a lock for security. These doors are not difficult to install after they are purchased. You can follow a few quick and moderately easy steps in order to install your exterior metal door.
- Make sure that the door fits the doorway. If it is too small, water or debris may enter the door when it is raining. It also will not be secure enough to protect you from home intruders or dangerous situations. If it is too large, you will not be able to complete the installation.
- Look at the door and measure how far the hinges are from the top and bottom of it. Check to see if there are more than two hinges.
- Measure where the holes are for the hinges in the door frame. If there are no hinges or holes, drill 1/8 inch holes where you will be installing the hinges. The spot where the hinges will be placed should match the exact measurements for the door.
- Screw the hinges into the door frame with a power drill. Make sure that they are very tight and sturdy. The hinges should be even and not crooked; you can use a leveling tool to check to make sure of this.
- Screw the hinges onto the door with a power drill. Make sure that they are completely drilled onto the door and are not loose. Check with a level tool to see if the hinges are not crooked.
- Close the door and use the level tool to make sure that it is even. Check to make sure that there are no open cracks or spaces around the door. Pull on the door and push the door while it is closed to check to see how stable it feels. Open the door and push and pull on it to make sure that it is stable.
