How to Install Memory on a Desktop Computer

Adding more memory (more technically known as RAM) is the fastest and most inexpensive method of speed up your computer.  If you didn't have the ability to add more RAM, your only option would be to buy a new computer.  Adding RAM is a simple procedure only requiring a few preparatory steps.

  1. Open your desktop computer case.  There will be a few thumbscrews towards the back of the computer case that can be unscrewed just with your fingers.  Set the screws aside, and slide the desktop computers side door off.  To better get at the RAM slots, lay the computer down so that the motherboard is facing up.

  2. Remove the existing RAM.  Motherboards generally have either two or four RAM slots.  If you have four RAM slots and two of them are open, then you don't need to remove any RAM modules to upgrade your RAM.  Otherwise, you will need to remove the old RAM by pushing down on the retaining pins at both ends of each RAM stick.  The RAM will pop up, and can be removed by simply pulling up.

  3. Insert the new RAM.  Take your new RAM and insert it into the open RAM slots.  Push down evenly on the RAM modules until you hear a click as both pins snap the RAM module into place.  RAM modules are keyed so that they can only go in one way.

  4. Replaced the side door of your computer case.  Retighten the thumbscrews and set the computer case back to its upright position.
