How to Install Plumbing Fixtures
Depending on the specific type of plumbing fixture you plan to install the process can either be extremely easy or rather difficult. The easiest of the bunch is installing a new kitchen or bathroom faucet. No matter the project, following a few short steps can easily lighten the load.
What You'll Need:
- Jawed wrench
- Pipe wrench
- Plumbers tape
- Seat wrench
- Flat tip screwdriver
- Allen wrench set
- Turn off the water supply to the area where you plan to install your new plumbing fixture. Typically the shutoff valve is located just under the sink inside the cabinet, in the rear of the toilet or for a shower or tub they are located in the basement. Should you have trouble locating it, you may need to shut off the main power supply that is located on the outside of the structure.
- Take off the old faucet by loosening the screws that are securing it in place. Typically, this is the setscrew that is holding the handle together. Once the screws have been properly loosed, the handle should easily slide off. Once removed loosen the chrome dome and remove it as well. Use an Allen wrench to complete this step.
- Look underneath the sink and locate the connection for the "hot" and "cold" water pipes and loosen them. If it is a kitchen faucet with an attached hose, you'll need to loosen the nuts that are securing the hose to the faucet. Loosen the larger nut that is securing the faucet onto the drainpipe. Once completed the faucet should easily detach from the top.
- Position the new drain so that it is evenly lined up to the pipes and faucet that are underneath the sink. Put the spray hose through the pre-cut hole for it and attach the faucet. Tighten the clamp with a screwdriver to secure it.
- Reconnect the "hot" and "cold" water pipes using a wrench. You may need to use plumbers tape in order to secure any loose seals. Reconnect the drain to the faucet and tighten it with plumber's tape should you see any signs of a leak.
- Turn the water supply back on and test it for any leaks.
