How to Install Replacement Windows in a Brick Wall

Replacing windows is important and can save a lot of money on energy costs. If a window is not replaced properly, heating and air conditioning can literally go out the window. The more energy that gets wasted, the higher an electric bill can be. Learn to install replacement windows to prevent hiring an expensive contractor.

Items to have on hand:

  • Sill pan

  • Flashing tape

  • Taping knife

  • Window

  • Jigsaw

  • Shims

  • Expanding foam

  • Caulk

  • Flexible flashing

  • Trim

  1. Remove the old window and set it aside.

  2. Apply the flashing tape to the sill.

  3. Using the taping knife, push the flashing tape behind the brick.

  4. Install the sill pan over the flashing tape. This prevents any water from leaking inside the window.

  5. Cover the side jams with flashing tape.

  6. Using the taping knife, separate the sheathing from any fasteners.

  7. Push the flexible flashing behind the brick at the sides of the window opening.

  8. Before installing the window, use caulking on both the top and side flanges.

  9. Shim the window and check it for proper fit and measurement.

  10. Install the new window. Use a jigsaw for trimming any vinyl flange that needs to be removed.

  11. Once the window is properly in place, use the expanding foam between the window and the interior to fill in the gap. This will create a proper seal and prevent any leakage.

  12. Apply flashing tape over the outside flange.

  13. Push the tape behind the brick if possible.

  14. Install the trim to fill in the existing opening.

  15. Cut away any excess and caulk both the sides and bottom.
