How to Install Room Air Conditioners Upstairs

Installing room air conditioners can be a good way to save money on your central cooling bills. If you use an upstairs room consistently it’s a good idea to use a room air conditioner instead of wasting energy cooling the entire house. You’ll need to pay attention to the installation to make sure the unit is secure and safe.

It is a good idea for you to install an air conditioner for your upstairs rooms. Rooms on the second and third floors tend to become much warmer than the bottom floor rooms. This is because heat rises. This can make for summer days and nights to get to be pretty uncomfortable. Luckily, installing an air conditioner in an upstairs room can be done pretty quickly and easily.

What You’ll Need:

  • Lumber

  • All Purpose Cleaner

  • Screws

  • Level

  • Screwdriver

  1. Open the window you plan on using. Use your cleaner to clean it out thoroughly. Get rid of any debris or loose particles before you start cleaning. Put the level in the window to make sure it is level.

  2. Get the mounting brackets that go with the air conditioner and install them into the drywall or the windowsill. The structure you choose needs to be able to support the air conditioner you put in place. Use lumber if you find that the windowsills are crumbling.

  3. Install the rails and the support devices that come along with your unit. Make sure that your rails are mounted into the walls firmly.

  4. Put the unit into the mounting brackets. It is best to have another person help you with this task as these units can be difficult to lift on your own.

  5. Lower the window so that it is on the unit. Use your level to make sure that it is in there straight. You may need to add lumber or other objects to keep the unit from shifting. Put foam between the window and unit.
