How to Install Slate Tile Over Concrete
When installing slate tile, you need a solid foundation. If there is concrete in the area, it can serve as that foundation for the new tile because it is a hard base. This will make the tile installation much easier. You will also have less preparation time with concrete.
How to Install Slate Tile Over Concrete
Materials Needed
- Broom
- Concrete leveling compound
- Chalk line
- Thinset
- Bucket
- Spacers
- Wet saw
- Grout
- Grout float
- Mop
- Sealer
- Sweep the entire area with a broom to remove any dirt or debris. Look over the concrete foundation to make sure there are no dips or cracks. Use a concrete leveling compound over the concrete to make sure it is even if you do find dips or cracks.
- Find the center of the area and snap a chalk line there. This is where you will begin installing the slate tile.
- Prepare the thinset in a bucket. Apply the thinset to the first section with a trowel. Spread enough thinset to lay three or four tiles at a time because the thinset dries very quickly.
- Place the tiles on top of the thinset and press down on them to make sure they are secure. Use spacers between the tiles to keep them even. Continue the process of spreading the thinset and installing the tiles until you come to the edges of the area. Use a wet saw to trim the tiles so they can fit.
- Allow the area to dry for one complete day. Mix the grout according to the directions on the package. Use a grout float to apply the ground between the tiles. Scrape away any excess grout. Go over the area with a damp mop. Allow the area to dry for three complete days.
- Allow the tile to dry for one day. Apply sealer over the slate tile. The sealer should be allowed to completely dry before anyone walks on it.
