How to Install Storage Cabinets

Most new prepackaged storage cabinets come with a wooden box frame, that makes up the body of the storage cabinet. Depending on the manufacturer, the installer may have to assemble this piece from panels provided to attach it to the wall. Installing a storage cabinet can be completed by anyone with basic hand tools and carpentry skills.

Supplies

  • Stud finder

  • Pencil

  • Measuring tape

  • Screwdriver

  • Screws

  • Level

  • Storage cabinet

  1. Run a stud finder horizontally over the wall where the cabinet is going to hang. When you hear it beep, mark the spot on your wall with your pencil. Continue this process until two studs have been found. Locate more if it is a larger cabinet.

  2. Use the tape measure in order to find the space between your pencil marks. Copy down the measurements.

  3. Hold a laser level across pencil points to make sure it is level.

  4. Mark these measurements on the inside back of the cabinet.

  5. Drill two holes on all the marks.

  6. Mount the cabinet on the wall by placing the holes over the marks on the wall. Use a screwdriver to run screws through the backside of the cabinet, through the wall and into the stud.

  7. Place two additional screws vertically underneath each of the two main ones for extra stability. There should be two rows of screws in the back of the cabinet, with three screws in each row. The extra screws will help to support the cabinet properly when items are added to it. Storage cabinets that have extra support screws can hold larger and heavier items.
