How to Install Window Screens
Window screens are not hard to remove and are something you can do yourself. The actual window frames usually don’t need to be replaced, but sometimes the window screens may need to be changed. With the right tools, installing the window screens won't take you very long.
- Wear a pair of gloves while you work, as the metal screen can cut you. Remove the window screen covering the border of the frame with a screwdriver. Pry it up and remove it. Throw away the damaged screen.
- Set the new window screen over the window frame.
- Trim the screen to fit the window using scissors sharp enough to cut through the metal screen. Make sure it is a little bigger than the actual frame and snip off at the corners.
- Use a screen spline roller to force the new window screen into the spline. Make sure it is tight and that the screen is not bagging in any places.
- Cut off any excess screen with a utility knife or a sharp pair of scissors. Throw the excess metal screen away.
Depending upon what type of window screen you have, some brands require you install from the inside of the house, and others from outside. Some window screens have tabs that allow the bottom pane to hinge toward the inside of the house, which allows you access to the window screen. You need to read the instructions that came with your window screen to ensure you install it properly.
