How to Install a Bicycle Computer
Bicycle computers provide lots of information for the cyclist. They track data about your speed and mileage. Computers can range from the complex to the simple in the information they record. Mounting your new bike computer is easily accomplished with a screwdriver.
- Remove the new unit from the box and install the magnet on the wheel by placing it over a spoke. Locate it near the spoke's center.
- Install the sensor by placing one end of a nylon tie in the sensor slot. Attach it to the front fork on a front mount computer, or the chain stay on a rear mount.
- Make sure the magnet rotates directly in front of the sensor when the wheel turns. Adjust the sensor for proper space between it and the magnet. If it is set incorrectly the computer won't function properly. Refer to manufacturer's specifications for spacing requirements.
- Tighten the sensor when all parts are properly positioned.
- Attach the wire to the sensor and run it along the bike frame to the handlebars. Make sure they can still maintain their turning radius and aren't bound by the wire. Attach the mounting bracket to the handlebars with a nylon tie or mounting screw. It must be located in the center, set facing upward for easy viewing.
- Slide the bicycle computer into the mounting bracket.
- Check the functions by first turning on the computer and rotating the bike wheel with the mounted magnet. The wheel's speed rotation is displayed if the unit is working properly. If no reading is present, try remounting the computer.
- Calibrate the computer by entering the wheel size. This enables it to produce accurate speed and mileage readings. Refer to the installation manual for the proper method to use for entry, depending on the type.
