How to Install a Chandelier

  1. Find out how much your chandelier weighs. Chandeliers that weigh more than your current light fixture will require a new ceiling junction box. These can be found at most hardware department stores.

  2. Disconnect the power to the circuit where the chandelier is located. Use a circuit tester to make sure the power is off to avoid electrical shock.

  3. Climb up on a sturdy ladder to remove the old chandelier or light fixture. Mark all wires with tape and make sure you note how the old light fixture was installed. Install a new ceiling junction box at this time if needed.

  4. Attach the new hardware that goes to the chandelier to the mounting strap. Install the mounting strap to your junction box.

  5. Locate all the wires for the chandelier. Install them according to your chandelier manual. Wire the new chandelier in the same manner as the old light fixture. Make sure all wires are connected to the same colors such as white to white or blue to blue. Make sure you remove about ½ inch of insulation from your new wires before wiring them to the ceiling wires.  After all wires are twisted together, twist the wire nuts on in a clockwise direction.

  6. To complete installing the chandelier, make sure your follow the manufacturer‘s recommendations. Most chandeliers may vary depending on their make and model.
