How to Install a Double Door Frame
Double door frames are designed for french, garden and other style doors. Installing a double door frame is very similar to installing a single door frame. However, there are a few additional steps involved. This is a project that any do-it-yourself enthusiast can do in a matter of hours, as long as they have some carpentry skills.
Supplies:
- Prehung double door unit
- Shims
- Hammer
- Penny nails
- Deck Screws
- Finsih nails
- Door casing
1. Stand inside the door opening, also called the door unit. Center yourself in the opening. Nail through the brick mold in the frame directly above the door.
2. Wedge the shims on the outside corners of the opening.
3. Put a level on the edge of one side of the opening. Wedge the shims behind the level, near the bottom corner of the opening. Nail through the jambs in the unit and wedge the shims into the frame.
4. Nail through the jamb in the middle and at the top of the opening. Add shims near the top of the center hinge.
5. Put a screw in the wooden sill. Tighten until snug against the floor.
6. Place the foam backer rod in the gap between the outside of the jamb and the frame studs. This seals the door.
7. Cut the door. it should fit the two jambs on the inside of the door.
8. Cut the molding so there is a 45 degree andle on the top of each side piece, one going left and one right.
9. Nail the side pieces of the molding to the jamb on each side of the opening.
10. Cut the top piece of the modling to fit with the angels and measurements of the sides. Nail the top parts in place.
11. Fill nail holes in the casing with caulk. Caulk around the edges of the door casing as well until the frame is sealed.
