How to Install a Fax Machine at Home

Today, many people use faxes in their homes. They may use them for work related reasons or not. Fax machines have come down in price and are very affordable. You can also use your computer. One of the great things about these faxes, is you don’t even have to have a separate phone line to use most of them. 

Normal Fax Machine Set-up

1. Go to any electrical store or office supply. Look over the different types and buy one you would like in your home or office.


2. Place the fax machine on a flat surface. Most faxes today are also phones. If that is the case, put it where you have your phone now.


3. Plug the phone cord into the fax (normally the phone hole will be in the back or on one of the sides.) Plug the fax machine into the power outlet.


4. Test your phone/fax by turning it on and listen for the dial tone. Most of these newer, machines have an LCD screen with information displayed and using it and the instruction manual, program your machine with your information.


5. Place paper in the machine when set up is completed and try out your new fax.

Using Your Computer as a Fax

1. Click on the control panel from your start menu. Select “Printer and faxes.” On the left side of the menu, select “Set up faxing” and click enter. Your computer will now run the setup wizard for installation.


2. Once you have followed all the steps required in the wizard, your online fax will be set up.


3. If you wish to use a scanner to fax paper documents simply tell the software you are using to print to the printer to print it to the scanner instead. It is as simple as that.
