Items Needed:
- New hot water tank
- Screwdriver
- Pipe wrench
- Level
- Teflon tape or pipe dope
- Purchase a new hot water tank with the same power source as the old one, either electric or gas. If going from electric to gas or gas to electric, it is advisable to consult with a plumber first.
- Turn off the water supply at the main water shutoff valve. If installing an electric hot water tank, cut off the electricity by flipping the breaker for the correct circuit. If it is a gas unit, turn off the gas at the main gas shutoff valve.
- Empty the old hot water tank. Turn on the hot water faucet located closest to the hot water heater and let it run. Then attach a water hose to the drain valve located on the unit. Place the other end of the water hose outside or over a floor drain. Open the drain valve on the hot water tank to drain the water.
- Disconnect the gas line or electrical service depending on the type of water heater.
- Disconnect the cold water line at the shut off valve to the heater and the hot water discharge at the union to the heater.
- Disconnect the flue from a gas hot water tank.
- Remove the old water heater and clean up any dirt or debris.
- Move the new hot water tank into position making sure to line up the existing plumbing with the locations on the water heater.
- Level the hot water heater by shimming under the legs.
- Install the fittings that came with the new water heater. Follow the manufacturer's directions to install the discharge pipe, pressure relief and temperature control.
- Reconnect the utility lines to the new hot water tank. Use Teflon tape on threaded copper or pipe dope on galvanized fittings.
- Connect the gas line or electricity depending on the type of unit. Check the gas line for leaks by turning on the gas and brushing a solution of soapy water on all of the joints. If bubbles form, there is a leak and the connection needs to be tightened.
- Attach the flue for a gas unit.
- Turn the water supply back on to fill the tank.
- After the tank is full, turn the power back on at the breaker or open the main gas valve and light the pilot.
