How to Install a Hydraulic Pump

A hydraulic, or water pump, is a widely used machine component that is used in a variety of capacities, but perhaps most commonly in vehicles. If a vehicle has been in use for several years and has accumulated considerable mileage, it may become necessary to replace the water pump.

Ensuring that your car's hydraulic pump is in good condition and functioning properly is important for your safety and vehicle's overall mechanical condition. If the hydraulic pump in your vehicle becomes damaged or inefficient, you can install a new one fairly easily with the right tools and a proper set of instructions.

Items Needed:

  • New hydraulic pump

  • Pliers

  • Liquid silicone

  • Coolant

  1. Make sure your car's ignition is off and the engine block has sufficiently cooled down by letting it sit for at least 30 minutes.

  2. Pop open the hood and prop it open.

  3. Use the pliers to remove the bolts securing the old hydraulic pump from the car.

  4. Disconnect the heater hose and lower radiator hose form the old hydraulic pump.

  5. Remove the old hydraulic pump from the vehicle.

  6. Place a bit of silicone on the new hydraulic pump surface and the new gasket on the engine side.

  7. Place the new hydraulic pump carefully inside the vehicle.

  8. Connect the heater hose to the replacement pump. Secure it by clamping it tightly with the pliers.

  9. Connect the lower radiator hose to the replacement pump. Make sure the clamp is seated properly and securely by using the pliers.

  10. Secure the new pump in place by tightening the bolts.

  11. Make sure the radiator drain is closed and fill the new hydraulic system with coolant.

  12. Start your car's engine and check the hydraulic pump for leaks.
