How to Install a Milgard Window

Properly installing Milgard windows is fairly easy with the right preparation. These vinyl replacement windows come in several varieties, but all install in a similar way. The key is to be sure the opening for your window is prepared properly.

Things You'll Need:

  • Razor knife

  • Electric saw

  • Level

  • Sandpaper

  • Shims

  • Tape measure

  • Batt insulation

  • Screws

  • Screw gun

  1. Cut away the caulk on the window opening that secures the exterior and interior trim. You want the framing of the window to be exposed, so remove as much as possible.

  2. Cut through the nailing flanges. If your window opening is pretty old, there may not be nailing flanges. If there are, removing them makes the job a lot easier by allowing you to avoid any work on the exterior finish.

  3. Check to be sure the window frame is straight. Use your level to do this. Trim down the window frame as necessary, using the electric saw or sandpaper.

  4. Place your Milgard window in the window frame. Ensure that it is sitting square and tight, using shims to help with this. Secure the window to the frame. Screw through the interior of the vinyl frame to do this.

  5. Block any gaps between the window and window frame. Use shims to push batt insulation firmly in place. Don't leave even the smallest gap exposed!

  6. Reinstall or replace the interior trim with trim nails. Remember to nail the trim to the window frame, not the window. Caulk the space between the trim and the vinyl.
