How to Install a Stereo in a New Honda Prelude
The Honda Prelude was manufactured up until 2001. The Prelude is a popular vehicle. Many owners take the time to upgrade and alter their car to match their personal style. One of the best upgrades that you can do to your Prelude is to install a new stereo system.
Things You Will Need:
- Wiring harness adaptor
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Select your new stereo. Visit a local electronics store to find an aftermarket stereo that is suitable to your Prelude. The store employees will be able to help you choose a stereo that will fit in your Prelude and meet all of your requirements for options and sound.
- Locate your original stereo's security code. This is often located inside the glove box or inside the stereo housing. Consult your Prelude's owner's manual if you cannot find the code easily. Write the code down and set it aside for later.
- Disconnect your car's power. Unplug the negative cable from your car's battery. This will help to protect the vehicle's electrical system as well as your body from any accidental shocks.
- Remove the dashboard trim. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the plastic trim from the front of your stereo. Once the trim is removed, the four screws that hold the radio in place will be exposed.
- Remove the four screws that hold the stereo in place. Pull the stereo out.
- Remove the head unit by unscrewing the two screws located on the top and bottom of the stereo frame. Once the screws are removed, you can pull the head unit out through the front of the frame.
- Insert the new stereo head unit into the frame. Secure it into place by replacing the two screws, one on top and one on bottom.
- Pull the wiring harness from the stereo housing in the dashboard. Insert the new wiring harness adaptor and connect it to the back of the new stereo.
- Install the new stereo and frame back into the dashboard by sliding them into place.
- Test the stereo to ensure that all of your wires are connected properly. You will need to attach your battery's negative cable and then turn on your ignition. Your stereo should have power and the speakers and controls should be functional.
- Replace the trim around the stereo and climate controls to give your new stereo a professional appearance.
