How to Install a Swimming Pool Fence

You can add safety to your swimming pool in your yard just by installing a fence.  A fence around your pool and keep infants for having direct access to the pool, which lessens the chances of them falling in and possibly drowning.  Pool fences can be installed fairly easy and does not take a lot of time to do.

Things you’ll need:

  • Garden hose (for measuring)

  • 42-inch cardboard piece

  • Goggles

  • Drill and drill bits (that can drill cement)

  • Waterproof marker

  • Fencing components

  1. Map out where you want the pool fence to be installed. Most pool gates are about 3 to 6 feet wide. Use a garden hose to measure around the area to see approximately how much fencing you will need to purchases.

  2. Create the holes for the fence poles. Take your cardboard that is at least 42 inches long and cut it into two small holes that are 36 inches apart. The distance between the two holes indicates the distance between the fence poles.

  3. Signify the distance between fence sections by cutting another hole 2 1/2 inches from one of the 36-inch holes. You have just created your drilling template.

  4. Lay your drilling template on the ground and place the first hole where you are to drill. Make a mark through the hole using you waterproof marker to help you to identify where to drill. Carefully hold the template steady as you mark through the hole of the second 36-inch hole, also marking the 2 1/2 inches for the fence section. Repeat the around the entire pool until you have all the markings for your fence.

  5. Measure your drill bit where you will install the cement against the plastic sleeves. Tape the drill bit up to the point of where it meets the sleeves. Once you see the tape it will let you know that you have drilled the hole to the size of the plastic sleeve.

  6. Put on your goggles and work gloves on before you begin to drill the cement.

  7. Lock the drill on hammer mode. As you drill the holes grasp the drill tightly, but do not bean down onto the drill. Brush away any cement once you are done drilling.

  8. Push the plastic sleeves firmly all the way down to the bottom of the freshly drilled holes. This is where you will insert the pool fence poles.

  9. Lay out all the poles and mesh that will make your swimming pool fence. Insert the fence poles along the perimeter beginning at the gate end of the pool; near the pool stairs, and then put up the mess fence.

  10. Find the opening for the upper most part of both the first and last poles. Finish the gate between these two poles by attaching the spring-loaded hook to the eye for the gate.
