How to Install a USB Mass Storage Device

USB mass storage devices use a technology called Universal Plug and Play to operate, which means you can plug them into your computer and they will automatically play without any additional set up. Installing a USB mass storage device on your computer is simple and only takes a few minutes.

  1. Plug the USB mass storage device into a free USB port on the front or back of your computer. It will work better if you plug the device into a USB port that hasn’t already had a device installed. If this is a device that will remain connected, it is best to use a USB port on the back of your computer.

  2. Allow the drivers to automatically install for the device. You should see a message on bottom right side of your screen that the device drivers are being installed. When it is finished, you will see a message display that says “Your Device Is Now Ready For Use.”

  3. Click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen, and then right-click “Computer.”

  4. Click “Properties” and then click “Device Manager” to open the Device Manager window.

  5. Click “USB Serial Bus Controller” in the list of devices showing in the Device Manager window. If you do not see a yellow exclamation mark or a question mark on the USB Mass Storage Device, the device installed correctly and is now ready for use.

  6. Click the “X” in the upper right corner of the window to close the Device Manager.
