How to Install a Vanity

Bathroom remodeling is one of the most popular home improvement projects to increase the value of your home. Installing a new bathroom vanity can give your bathroom a much needed upgrade without a lot of major construction. The project can usually be accomplished by any weekend do-it-yourself handyman.

Step One

Measure your current vanity. It is important before purchasing a new unit to be sure that the new one will easily fit in your existing space. Shop for and purchase your new unit for your project.

Step Two

Turn off the water to your existing vanity sink. This is a very important step. Unconnect the water supply lines and the drains from your old vanity. Remove the old vanity from the wall.

Step Three

Examine the floor to see if it is in good condition and is still level. If it is level, locate the studs on the back wall and mark. Place the new vanity against the wall and lightly mark with a pencil the locations of the water and drain connections.

Step Four

Cut out the water and drain connections in the new vanity with a hole saw. The holes should be about 1/2 inch larger than your pipes. This will allow for easier pipe installation. Once the pipe connections are cut, place the new unit against the wall and screw it through the back to your wall studs. This should secure the unit. Be sure the unit is level as you tighten it to the wall.

Step Five

Most vanities are two part units with a base and top. Now that the base has been installed, it's time to put on the new vanity top. These can be constructed of granite or Formica and may or may not contain a preformed recessed water vessel. Install your vanity top by placing it on top of the newly installed vanity base. Place your faucets and drain pieces in their proper place and connect to the water supplies and drain lines.

Step Six

Finish by installing a base molding of your choice along the bottom of your new vanity base and seal with caulking. Test your water connections to be sure they aren't leaking.
