How to Install and Trim Pocket Doors

Pocket doors have a multitude of applications. They can be used in a bedroom, bathroom or utility room. Installation can be very easy as well. In an hour or two, you can have your new pocket doors hung and trimmed properly.

Items you’ll need:

  • Pocket door

  • Hardware

  • Screwdriver

  • Hammer

  • Sawhorses

  • Circular Saw

  • Sandpaper

  • Track

  • Level

  • Shim

  • Drill

  1. Check to make sure that the doorway is clear before you begin installation. There should be no preexisting hardware or nails in the doorway as these will keep the pocket doors from being hung properly.

  2. Ensure that track will be level once it has been installed. Use the level to make sure of this. If the doorway is off slightly, use a shim to correct the angle.

  3. Install the track using the hardware that was included with the door. There will be hardware that you will need to install at the top and the bottom of the doorway. You will likely need a hammer, screwdriver and a drill to complete this step. Consult with the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure that you know exactly how to install your specific hardware.

  4. Ensure that the doors will fit properly once they are hung. If you notice that they are too big, you will need to trim them down to size. Place the door on the sawhorses and cut them to size using your circular saw. Be careful not to cut off too much. You can always cut more off, but you cannot add back to the door once you cut it.

  5. Hang the completed door on the track, ensuring that it is properly inserted in the top and bottom of the doorway.
