How to Insulate Basement Windows in Winter

It's a fact that often times the basement is considered the coldest part of the home. Sometimes they are even unbearably cold. A simple solution to this problem is to properly insulate your basement during the winter months. In addition to warming up the space it can also save you money on your heating bill.

What You'll Need:

  • Window insulation film kit

  • Wet rags

  • Scissors

  • Blow dryer

  • Measuring tape

  1. Take down any window treatments or blinds so that you have easy and total access to each window frame in your basement.

  2. Using a wet rag, wipe down each window frame where you'll attach the tape. This process will remove any dust or other debris from the surface that can prevent the tape from adhering properly.

  3. Apply the double-sided tape to each window frame on each of the four sides.

  4. Using your measuring tape, measure each of the windows and cut a sheet of plastic to match that size. Using the double-sided tape, stick it to the plastic until it feels secure. Keep in mind the film will not be completely secure until you use a blow-dryer to finish the adhering process.

  5. Turn the blow dryer to its highest setting and begin rotating it around the edge of the film. At this point you should begin to notice that film is becoming tighter, almost to the point where it looks like it is part of the window. The transition between the two should be near seamless if done properly.  Continue blowing the hot air all around the surface of the film until you are confident it is secure.

  6. Re-hang your window treatments or blinds.

  7. To remove the film, simply peel the plastic from the tape then peel the tape from the window frame.
