How to Insulate Mobile Home Skirting

Virtually all mobile homes have to be leveled when they are placed in position. They will also most likely have an open space underneath them that will be basically open to air, wind, freezing temps and animals. This space is normally covered with what they call a skirt or skirting. When insulated this skirting will help keep the mobile home’s air conditioner and heating unit working more efficiently especially if insulated.

Things that you will need:

  • Utility knife

  • Scrub brush

  • Good cleaning material

  • Contact cement or an adhesive or staples.

  • Insulation boards or foam boards

  1. Take the skirting off of the mobile home. Be sure to mark where each section came from. You will want to put it back in the same place to avoid doing any re-cutting after insulating it.

  2. Use the heavy duty cleaning material and the scrub the skirting clean of all loose materials and dirt. Rinse it down thoroughly and allow it to dry completely.

  3. Take the utility knife and cut your insulation material so it will fit each piece of skirting you removed from the mobile home. Make certain you leave at least an inch so your can place it back up underneath the mobile home outer wall and fit back into the track lines it came from.

  4. Put the material you are using to secure the insulation material to the skirting on the backside of the skirting and place the insulation on. If you used staples you may put the skirting back on the mobile home. If you used an adhesive or cement allow it to dry and replace when it has done so.
