How to Insulate a Steel Building
Whether you use your steel building for day-to-day operations or storage, it is a good idea to have it insulated. This can be expensive, but the money you save over time on the energy bill will pay off in the long run.
- Have large steel studs installed during construction. The spacing between the larger studs will allow you to add more insulation because the area between the steel bars will be wider.
- Check the framework. Have a heating and cooling expert come in and test for drafts in the paneling. If the problem is in the paneling, then this will need to be addressed before you can start insulation.
- Decide which type of insulation you will use. Icynene is one option for insulation. Its expandable capacity allows it to conform to any size measurement and fill the entire wall. Another benefit is that it is free of toxic chemicals. Only water is needed for its expansion. Icynene is high quality and also highly priced. If you are on a budget, you may want to go with regular foam insulation.
- Apply tape to the frame. You will need to use double-sided tape and place it along the frame of the building. Placement of the tape is crucial as this is what secures the insulation.
- Lay out the insulation. Unroll it one layer at a time and position it over the frame.
- Place sheeting over the insulation. Tape up the seams and apply metal strapping to hold all components in place.
