How to Insulate a Sunroom
Many homeowners install beautiful sunrooms in their houses to add more living space. These rooms are composed mostly of windows, making them vulnerable to the weather. On hot summer days, the sunroom may be too hot to enjoy; however, in the winter, it may be too chilly. Insulating the sunroom will create a space that is climate-controlled for all four seasons.
What You'll Need:
- Batt roll fiberglass insulation
- Two-by-six studs
- Drywall
- Hammer
- Nails
- Linseed oil putty
- Caulking gun
- Putty Knife
- Protective goggles
- Work gloves
- Purchase pre-cut batt roll fiberglass insulation. Select a roll that is the right size for the sunroom. Bring measurements to the home improvement store, to get help in selecting the best size. Batt insulation is inexpensive and relatively simple to install.
- Add two-by-six studs to the frame of the sunroom. This size stud will leave more space for insulation, creating a more energy efficient space. Use a hammer and nails to secure the studs into place. 16d or 8d nails are recommended. Protective goggles and work gloves should be worn at all times to prevent injury.
- Place the batt roll insulation between the studs, tucking it in firmly under the boards. Cut the insulation to fit around electrical wires or outlets. Covering them may cause a fire.
- Cover any exposed studs with the drywall. Cut the drywall to fit the height of the room, and secure it in place with drywall nails. You may paint the drywall after the insulation is completed, if desired.
- Glaze the windows with the linseed oil putty. Put the putty in the caulking gun, and apply it where the glass meets the frame. Smooth out the putty with the putty knife. Allow the glazing to set for 24 hours before opening or closing the window. Glazed windows create a tight seal, keeping the outside air from leaking inside.
- Upgrade any old windows. Double pane glass is more energy efficient. Any single pane windows should be replaced. Adding heavy curtains is another way to keep temperatures regulated around the windows.
