How to Interview a Real Estate Agent

A person who wants to use a real estate agent should consider conducting an interview before hiring one. An interview can help a person to find out how well the agent knows the area. A real estate agent who has sold several homes in the area is one to consider using as a listing agent.

  1. Ask a friend or relative for a recommendation on a real estate agent to use for your home listing. If you cannot get a recommendation, look in the real estate section of your newspaper. Find the agents who have the most listings in the paper and decide which ones to contact for an interview.

  2. Call the first agent on your list and arrange a time to meet. Create a list of the questions you want to ask the agent. One of the most important things to ask is how many homes the agent has sold that are in the price range of the home you want to list. For example, an agent who specializes in low-end properties is one you may not want to use if your home is in a more affluent neighborhood.

  3. Meet with the real estate agent to conduct your interview. Ask the agent the questions on your list. Take notes during the interview so you can review them after the meeting is over.

  4. Find out how the agent intends to market your home. Many agents use sources other than newspapers or print advertisements. Ask the agent if your home will have an online listing, which can greatly improve your chances of finding a buyer.

  5. Decide whether to use the real estate agent for your listing or to find others to interview. Make sure to let the agent know you will be back in touch. Interview other agents and see if any of them are better qualified to list your home. Choose the agent you want to use and contact the ones you do not use as a courtesy.
