How to Invest in a Hedge Fund

Hedge funds are essentially pools of money invested by a group of individuals or organizations that are approved by the fund's overseers. These funds are often highly selective, they tend to have guidelines or criterion that potential investors must satisfy. The investment strategies employed by hedge funds are typically monitored by expert financial advisers.

  1. Research hedge funds. It is important that every potential investor develops a basic understanding of how these funds operate. This includes familiarizing yourself with how hedge funds select their investors and how they invest their money. Hedge funds cater to two types of investors; the first type is accredited investors, or those who are worth $1 million or more; the second type is qualified purchasers, who are worth more than $5 million. Hedge funds vary greatly in the investment strategies they use, so be sure to carefully study how potential funds will use your money.

  2. Meet the minimum requirements to consider investing in a hedge fund. Hedge funds are not as carefully monitored by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission as other types of funds, meaning that investing in these funds can be quite risky due to the lack of oversight. It is for this reason that hedge funds are required to set restrictions related to the net worth of their investors. The least strict hedge funds require investors to have a net worth of at least $1 million and an individual annual income of $200,000 or more, or a household income of at least $300,000.

  3. Form a group of 35 people or more if you do not meet the minimum requirements described in the previous step. Hedge funds are allowed to accept investments from groups of at least 35 investors who do not meet the individual requirements to invest.
