Tips on Moving Single Wide Mobile Homes

How to Join Two Single Wide Mobile Homes Into a Double Wide

Mobile Homes

Joining two single wide mobile homes together can create a larger space in a short time and it is cost-effective.  Though it is easier than building an addition or building a home, it is not a job for a beginner or novice builder.

Double Wide Home
  1. Level the ground where both mobile homes will be.  Both mobile homes must be even and flat, or you will have problems joining them or when they settle.
  2. Remove the outer siding from both mobile homes.
  3. Use 2x4s to build a frame the same size as the walls to be joined.  Create two walls, one for each single wide mobile home.  Measure each mobile home separately, because they may be different sizes.
  4. Build a wall by placing boards vertically inside the frame every two feet.
  5. Do this for both frames trying to match the boards as close as possible between the walls.
  6. Lift the walls from the ground and attach each wall to its respective mobile home using bolts and steel plates.
  7. Move the second mobile home in place being careful to line up the walls.  Adjust the height as needed.

  8. Join the two walls with six inch bolts.  Tighten bolts securely to prevent the mobile home from shifting.
  9. Connect wiring and pipes as needed.  Keep in mind that the current furnace and air conditioner may not be powerful enough to heat or cool a double wide mobile home.  You may need to run two furnaces or upgrade.
  10. Build a doorway between the two trailers as needed.  The doorway will not have a floor over the seam, so create one with plywood.  Insulate around the door frame to prevent air from entering the home.
  11. Use plywood to cover the gap on the roof.  Re-roof the two mobile homes as one unit to create a water proof seal.
  12. Since both single wide mobile homes will have different siding, replace siding with matching siding.
