How to Keep Healthy Foods in Your Dorm Room

Many college students, especially freshman, are at risk of gaining weight when starting college.  This is partly because of increased opportunities to snack as well as more access to unhealthy foods.  College students also view healthy foods as being too expensive.  By keeping low-cost, healthy foods available in your dorm room, you will be better able to resist any junk food cravings and can avoid gaining weight.

  • Keep plenty of water in your dorm room.  Drinking water can curb cravings and satisfy you the same as snacking would.  By keeping only water in your room, you avoid drinking extra calories.  Calorie intake is best saved for food.

  • Buy a small dorm refrigerator if one is not already provided.  Stock it with lots of fruits and vegetables.  These snacks are satisfying and packed with nutrition that can be difficult to find elsewhere on campus.  Fruits and vegetables also contain high amounts of fiber.  Fiber keeps you feeling full longer.  It is also known to help you lose weight by keeping your digestive system regulated.

  • Take advantage of the convenience stores and dining halls around your dorm.  However, avoid junk food by making healthier choices when buying snacks.  Dried fruits, yogurt, nuts and seeds are all healthy choices.  Choose items that are low in calories and sugar but are high in protein and fiber.  Read nutrition labels fully before buying these snacks.

  • Stock up on ingredients to make sandwiches.  Sandwiches are quick and compact ways to take in nutrition and satisfy cravings.  Buy fixings such as whole wheat bread, lean meats, cheeses and veggies.  By keeping these in your dorm room, you will reduce temptation to order pizza during late-night study sessions.

  • Consider buying oatmeal to keep on hand as a snack.  Unprocessed oats are the best because pre-packaged oatmeal can contain added sugar.  Oatmeal also makes for a fulfilling breakfast.  Eating breakfast can reduce appetite throughout the day.

  • Look for lower fat, lower calorie versions of your favorite foods.  For example, if you like chocolate, buy a small package of sugar free chocolates.  Reduced fat cookies, muffins or other temptation items will satisfy the cravings with limited impact on your diet.  Always eat these foods in moderation, even the lower calorie versions.
