How to Keep Kangaroos as Pets
Kangaroos can be loving and adorable pets; however, there is more to know about owning a kangaroo than there is to know about owning a cat or dog. You must be able to provide the essential necessities and care that a kangaroo requires. Before making the leap into kangaroo ownership, make certain you have researched all of the necessary information you need concerning how to keep kangaroos as pets.
- Purchase your kangaroo from a reputable and responsible breeder and be sure that your kangaroo has had a health check from a veterinarian before bringing him home.
- If you have a male kangaroo, have him neutered as soon as possible, if he isn't already. Neutered males are less aggressive and will not have certain behaviors on their mind.
- Before bringing your kangaroo home, erect a fence that is at least 6 feet high around a large area so that your kangaroo has plenty of room to run and play. Red kangaroos can cover 25 feet of ground in one leap and jump up to 6 feet high.
- If you have a baby kangaroo, which is called a joey, you will have to bottle feed him around the clock. Joeys should be kept inside for the first one or two years.
- Feed your adult kangaroo pelleted horse feed, vegetables, hay and fruits. They like to graze on fresh grass, bushes and leaves. Make sure the foliage he grazes on has not been treated with chemicals.
- Keep tree branches and wood available for your kangaroo so that he can sharpen his teeth.
- Purchase formulated kangaroo food that has the essential nutrients that your kangaroo needs.
- Locate a veterinarian that specializes in exotic animals, as your kangaroo will need a checkup every year and he may need to be examined if he becomes ill.
- Check the laws, regulations and local ordinances in your area about keeping a kangaroo as a pet.
