How to Keep Squirrels Off a Bird Feeder

If you have bird feeders in your yard, you have probably learned that squirrels are very resourceful creatures. You may think that it is impossible to keep these irritating rodents out of your bird feeders but there is a way. It does not take too much time or effort to outsmart these tricky creatures.

  1. Go online and do a search for "squirrel-proof" bird feeders.

  2. Determine which of your local home improvement stores offers the best price for the bird feeders.

  3. Go to your local home improvement store.

  4. Purchase a bird feeder that is designated to be "squirrel-proof" and a strong, long wire.

  5. Make sure to keep your receipt in case the wire is not long enough for your needs. This way you will be able to return or exchange the wire.

  6. Take the wire and secure it to the side of your home.

  7. Take the other end of the wire and secure it to a tree in your yard.

  8. Make sure that you will be able to see the bird house from your home so that you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the birds.

  9. Place the bird feeder in the center of the wire.

  10. Hang empty soda bottles, PVC piping, film canisters without film in them, and records along the wire. This will make it very difficult for the squirrels to get to the bird feeder.

  11. Set up stations with food for the squirrels along the ground in other spots of your yard. This will help deter the squirrels from even attempting to get to the bird feeder.
