How to Keep Your Orthodontic Retainer

Retainers are removable dental devices that help keep teeth straight or in place. They are usually worn by someone who has had braces or another orthodontic procedure. Because retainers are removable, they can easily become broken or lost. Luckily there are few different ways you can keep your retainer safe and clean.

  • Keep your retainer in the case provided by your orthodontist. These cases are designed to keep your retainer clean and prevent it from being broken. If you have lost your case, you can ask you dentist for a replacement. If you cannot get a replacement case right away, use another type of container to place your container in.

  • Keep your retainer and case in one spot in your home at all times. This will prevent you from losing either of them and remind you to remove the retainer at night and replace it in the morning. The bathroom sink or your nightstand is a great place to keep your retainer and case.

  • Keep your retainer in your mouth while eating. This will prevent you from leaving your retainer on a table or lunch tray. When you are finished eating, rinse your retainer with water to remove any food particles. If you have to remove your retainer when eating, be sure to keep it in a safe place. You may want to consider leaving it on the counter if you are at home. If you are at school, leave it in your locker so you do not accidentally throw it away.

  • Purchase an extra case for your retainer and keep it in your car, purse or backpack. This will allow you to remove your retainer as desired, and provide a safe place to keep it. You can purchase an extra retainer case from most major department stores. You may also ask your orthodontist for an extra one and if there is a charge.
