How to Keep a Garden Journal
Gardening is a popular hobby across the United States. However, keeping track of plant maintenance, pest problems and growing seasons can be confusing. Starting a garden journal is an easy way to stay organized and will guarantee your outdoor living space looks beautiful.
Items needed:
- Notebook or binder
- Plastic bag
Instructions:
- Select a notebook for your garden journal. Find a notebook that has plenty of pages for writing. Some gardeners choose a binder for their journal. A binder can be customized with dividers, calendars and folders.
- Make a listing of all plants in your garden. Divide the plants into sections, such as front yard plantings, back yard flowerbeds and trees.
- Fill out the calendar. Examine the needs of each plant, and write down dates for pruning, deadheading and fertilizing.
- Devote a section to gardening ideas and future design options. If you find a new idea in a magazine or newspaper, keep the page in your journal for future reference.
- Keep seed packets, plant information cards and purchase receipts in the journal. If you have a binder, designate a folder or envelope for these items.
- Record any pest information. If you have had trouble with insects, fungi or animals, write down any treatment information in your journal. This will be helpful if the problem occurs in the future.
- Store the journal with your other gardening supplies. To keep the journal safe from water or soil, place the journal in a large, resealable plastic bag.
