How to Keep a Pet Goat

Goats are traditionally thought of as farm animals, but also serve as great companions and make a cute and fun-loving pet. To keep a pet goat is a wonderful experience, but it is a great responsibility that requires a lot of time and dedication. Goats are enjoyable creatures with lots of energy and a large appetite.

  • Goats are outside animals, and training them to be inside animals is not realistic. They aren't likely to be house-broken or to cuddle with you. Goats won't respond to their name being called, but will keep eye contact with those who they know and respect.

  • Goats are very active and need plenty of attention. They respond well to positive reinforcement like food. They don't respond well to harsh discipline, and could become dangerous in that sort of situation.

  • Be sure to allow enough roaming space. Goats need at least an acre of land and it must be fenced in for their protection.

  • Provide warm and dry shelter. Even though goats are outside animals, they still need a safe shelter during bad weather. Be sure that the shelter you provide is sturdy and not likely to get knocked over.

  • Supply food and fresh water. Goats need hay and grass, so keep grain where goats don't have easy access to it. Change their water daily.

  • Goats love to explore, so walk your goat. They make excellent hiking buddies. Exercise goats frequently.

  • Make goats happy with treats. Save the treats for special occasions because goats can gain weight by eating them often. Treats such as fruit, molasses and hedge clippings are among their favorites.

  • Goats are susceptible to a number of infectious and chronic diseases. Find a veterinarian who will treat your goat. Routine preventative treatment for worms and other parasites are necessary.

  • Be gentle when touching your goat. Don't move suddenly or make any unexpected motions. Your goat will respond better with gentle loving touches.

  • Goats are herd animals which mean they will thrive better with companionship from another goat than an owner. If you are gone all day and your goat is left alone, it will not be a happy goat. If affordable, provide a goat friend.
