How to Keep a Raccoon as a Pet

  1. Check to make sure it is legal in your state to have a raccoon as a pet. If it is legal, a license may be required. This information can be obtained from your county animal shelter.

  2. Locate an animal doctor in your area that would be willing to care for a raccoon. Some vets will not treat them because they can be aggressive.

  3. Take the raccoon to the vet to get shots for rabies and distemperment.

  4. Shower the pet with a lot of attention because they are very needy animals and will squeal when they are being neglected.

  5. Provide them with their own space in the home. They like to burrow and having their own special space to dig would prevent them from destroying things in other rooms of the house.

  6. Avoid feeding your pet raccoon red meat because it can lead to obesity, which could result in heart failure. Feed it fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, chicken and turkey.

  7. Allow the raccoon to play in water on a regular basis, but only bathe it using shampoo twice a year.
