How to Kill Grubs in Vegetable Gardens
"Grub" is the name that is used to describe small white pests that can appear in vegetable gardens. A grub is a baby beetle. They feed on the vegetable's roots, which can quickly destroy even a well-established vegetable garden. If you notice grubs in your vegetable garden, it is important that you act quickly.
Things You Will Need:
- Insecticide (Sevin works well on grubs)
- Parasitic nematodes
- Plant a natural barrier around the perimeter of your garden. There are a few plants which naturally repel the adult beetles that lay grubs in your garden. These include begonias, carnations, baby's breath and juniper bushes, among others. Surround your vegetable garden with a natural wall of one of these plants in order to protect your garden from grubs.
- Use a commercial pesticide. If you have noticed grubs in your garden, you should visit your local plant nursery to purchase a pesticide. One of the most effective pesticides that you can use is Sevin. Many pesticides work well to remove grubs from vegetable gardens. Ask the gardener on staff for a recommendation.
- Use a natural parasite. Adding parasitic nematodes to your garden is a great way to remove the grubs in a natural manner. The nematode is a worm that bores into the grubs, infecting them with toxins and killing them. Nematodes do not harm your vegetable garden and can provide a great, chemical-free solution to your grub problem. You can purchase parasitic nematodes at most garden supply stores or nurseries.
- Kill the adult beetles. If you find a large nest or gathering of adult beetles, kill them and destroy the nest. This will help you to further reduce the number of grubs in your garden.
