How to Kill Winter Weeds When Planting a Spring Garden

The best way to prevent weeds in your garden is to prepare early. You can take care of winter weeds that can steal important nutrients from your spring garden. Letting these weeds go untamed will leave you with less fertile soil for the spring flowers.

Winter weeds can wreak havoc on your lawn and garden when spring time comes around. You will need to know how to get rid of them quickly and for good. They can attract pests and also compete with your flowers and plants for nutrients.

What You’ll Need:

  • Pickax

  • Pre Emergence Herbicide

  • Rototiller

  • Black Plastic Mulch

  • Shovel

  • Bricks or Rocks

  1. Rototill the area where the garden bed will be. Then use your pickax to turn the soil, do this more than once to ensure it is done properly. This needs to be done during the fall so that you can get rid of the winter weeds while they are still young. You will need to repeat this process early in the spring right when the weeds begin to germinate. Immediately plant your garden after doing this in the spring.

  2. Prepare the bed of the garden and add the necessary fertilizer before transplanting any seeds. Use black plastic mulch to keep any winter weeds from germinating their seeds. Use your topsoil to bury out the edges and keep it weighed down with your bricks or rocks. You can then begin to plant your garden as you normally would.

  3. Use your pre emergence herbicide to get rid of any embryos in the weed seeds. Calculate about three weeks before the seeds have a chance to sprout to apply this chemical. If you are unsure of when to expect this, then speak with a professional on the subject. Remember that time is of the essence to do it quickly.
