How to Layer Clothing
Wearing layers of clothing makes sense no matter what the occasion is. There are times where even a trip to the store may leave you freezing from the air conditioning or very hot from the heat. If you plan on doing something outdoors, you should definitely layer your clothing so that you can adjust what you are wearing to fit the weather and so you are prepared for any situation that may arise.
- Before putting on your clothes, plan out the day in your head. Consider the day's events and remember that layers can add to your appearance, but they can also take away from it. First impressions are lasting, which makes them very important.
- Put on your regular foundation pieces, socks, underwear, etc. If it is cold out you can also put on a pair of long underwear. It is recommended that you have two pairs, one for light to mildly cold weather and a heavier pair for really cold weather.
- Choose the layers to go over your foundation. Keep in mind that the layers you choose should be slightly bigger than the previous layer, but not take away from your figure. A tight fitting shirt or pullover should be the first layer you put on, if you are a man. Women should wear a cami or spaghetti strapped shirt.
- The bottoms you select should be flattering, yet sensible. Jeans, corduroy or khakis work well for men. Women should consider placing a pair of tights or capri pants under a skirt. If the weather becomes warm you can remove the pants, but if it stays chilly the tights will keep your legs warm.
- Choose a coat based on what the weather is supposed to be later in the day. You can always drape it over your arm or leave it in the car until you need it. Make sure to include gloves, scarves and hats if needed.
